"Picture in the Paper" is the fourth episode of the 789 Films animated web series, Mr. Plinkett: The Animated Series. It first aired on June 13, 2012 on YouTube.[1] The episode was animated and edited by Shaun McKinnon, combining preexisting voice-work by Mike Stoklasa and RedLetterMedia productions with audio from a performance of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four to create a unified story.[2]
Mr. Plinkett's trip to the Department of Motor Vehicles goes awry when he is questioned about the disappearance of a local boy. The story is narrated from two perspectives, that of Plinkett and that of Plinkett's interrogator. The episode was originally produced as the fifth in the series, but was released as the fourth episode after RedLetterMedia picked up the series.
Plot[]
Mr. Plinkett goes to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get a new title and registration for his Cadillac, but instead he is violently beaten and questioned about the abduction of a boy named Johnny. Plinkett protests that he kidnapped Johnny with good intentions by rescuing the boy from his inattentive mother and acting as a father figure. His objections are to no avail and he is beaten repeatedly.
A somber Johnny is returned to his mother, but a small smile appears on his face as he eats Plinkett's pizza roll.

Production[]
Episodes in the first season were initially distributed with alternate titles; the original title of this episode was "Mr. Plinkett visits the DMV." Many visual references to RedLetterMedia productions are scattered throughout the short.
Sources for the audio used in the episode include Baby's Day Out, 1984, and other RedLetterMedia productions. The audio from Baby's Day Out was previously used in the Mr. Plinkett review of Baby's Day Out.
The episode first aired June 13, 2012 on the 789 Films YouTube channel.[1] It was officially released August 19, 2012 on Blip,[3] and later added to the RedLetterMedia YouTube channel on March 16, 2013.
Easter Eggs[]
The address of the Department of Motor Vehicles is 1984, the title of the George Orwell book. The name of the animation studio is seen on the channel knob of Plinkett's television set and on the fence of Plinkett's yard.
